Case Study - Bateman Skips
Reducing Carryback on a Cleated Recycling Conveyor
The Challenge
Bateman Skips was experiencing ongoing carryback issues on a cleated conveyor belt handling mixed recycling material.
Standard cleaning systems struggled with the belt’s cleats and clip joints, leading to material build-up, increased clean-up time, and unnecessary wear on the conveyor system.
Maintenance teams were spending valuable time dealing with spillage and reactive issues rather than planned maintenance.
The Conveyor Setup
Industry:
Waste & Recycling
Belt type:
Cleated belt with clip joints
Material:
Mixed recycling waste
Key issues:
Carryback, spillage, maintenance downtime
The RH Solution
RH Conveyors supplied and installed a Duplex Cleated Belt Scraper, specifically designed to clean cleated belts without damaging the belt profile or fasteners.
The patented finger-blade design allowed the scraper to flex around the cleats and safely roll over clip joints, providing consistent cleaning without aggressive contact or belt wear.
The system was selected as a fixed, low-maintenance solution to suit the site’s operational demands.
The Result
Significant reduction in carryback and spillage
Cleaner return side and reduced housekeeping requirements
Less reactive maintenance
Improved belt protection and longer service life
A more reliable conveyor system overall
Why This Solution Worked
Designed specifically for cleated belts
Non-damaging finger-blade design
Compatible with clip joints
Fixed system with minimal ongoing maintenance
Client Feedback
“We had recently installed a chevron conveyor belt to our material recovery facility at our waste transfer station to solve a high blockage area, whilst this solution resolved the problem it intended to, it did create a new issue. We were suffering from a great deal of carryback; material that sticks to the belt and then is deposited on the floor creating a great deal of mess and potentially causing more blockages and excess wear.
Our issue was severe, the tidy up was consuming circa 24 manhours, twice a week. I visited RH Conveyor’s stall at the RWM Expo 25, I was very impressed with the products they had on display and arranged a follow up conversation after the show. We went ahead with the purchase of a primary and secondary belt cleaner. These products have greatly improved our productivity, it has reduced our clean up to under one hour per week, not only have they increased our runtime but have gone a long way towards increasing moral on site too, our operatives are no longer faced with hours of arduous labour on a weekly basis.
The guys at RH were very knowledgeable; they clearly know their products inside out and they care, I received calls and texts from Jason following the install to check how the products were performing and that they had met our needs, which they certainly had!”
